If involved in a crash, how safe is your SUV? It may be one of the safest vehicles on the road in many types of accidents. But it might not be safe in all types of crashes. In recent years, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested driver-side small overlap crashes. As a result of the safety deficiencies identified, SUV manufacturers have improved the safety of the vehicles in this type of driver side crash.
The IIHS recently conducted (published in June 2018) similar tests of mid-sized SUVs in “passenger side small overlap” accidents. These are accidents that cause the right front of the vehicle to take the force of the crash. This might be a crash with another vehicle that primarily impacts the right front of the SUV. This type of crash also includes accidents that involve the right front of an SUV hitting a stationary object, such as a tree or a telephone pole. [Read more…]
