What do you think about the introduction of in-vehicle facial recognition technology? The idea is worth consideration. The technology exists. It probably can be installed very easily. Are you ready to have facial recognition technology in your vehicle? Do you want it in your vehicle?

protection and security.
In a time of rampant hacking and misuse of data from a range of technologies, it is important to think about the use of facial recognition technology in your vehicle.
An MIT-spinoff company has created the technology used by businesses to test consumer engagement with ads, videos and TV programming. Some companies use similar technology to monitor how you use their websites. The company behind the facial-recognition technology claims that it can detect complex and nuanced emotions and cognitive states. They also claim that they have created a data repository with more than 7 million faces that have been analyzed from 87 countries.
The technology was revealed at a recent show. A car was rigged with cameras inside that use facial recognition and artificial intelligence to identify the emotional and cognitive state of the driver and of passengers in the back seat of the car. The system noted that the driver was showing some signs of drowsiness: yawning and eye closures of a tired person. When it was recognized, the system displayed a message to the driver. The message appeared on the screen in the car. It suggested that the driver either stop for coffee or play music. If it detected extreme drowsiness, it suggests driving to the nearest rest stop for a break or a beverage. This was accomplished via a camera attached to the steering column.
The demonstration car was also fitted with a camera above the rear-view mirror. This facial recognition camera monitored passengers in the back seat. According to the presentation and the literature, the point of the back-seat view is “to optimize the back-seat experience.” There is the potential of adjusting climate control, speaker volume or seat settings based on the preferences of the person sitting in the seat.
Presenters insisted that the company does not record or maintain records of the facial recognition information gathered during a drive. As we have seen, however, aggregate data can be misused. Another question is how we ensure that the technology cannot be hacked. A final question is how we plan to ensure that marketing and sales messages will not be delivered through the system.
The in-vehicle facial recognition technology exists. We could probably see it installed in vehicles in the next few years. But should it be installed? Is it worth the trade-off?
